“Carcassonne – The Woods” must be played with CARCASSONNE. This expansion can
also be played with all previous expansions of Carcassonne.
All rules of the game of CARCASSONNE remain the same!
The additional rules for this expansion are as follows.
All new landscape tiles and the tiles of the base game are mixed at the start of the game.
The Forest Tiles
If a tile with a forest section is turned face up, the player fi rst places
the tile according to the known rules. If the card cannot be placed
appropriately, it is mixed again into the stack and a new tile is
drawn. The player can now place a follower on the forest, which is
called a Woodsman. It should be noted that a Woodsman can only
be placed when the forest tile is fi rst placed, i.e. if the player has the
possibility to continue building an unoccupied forest with the drawn
tile, he may not place a Woodsman (except for the leaf tiles
described below). For a completed forest, the player who has the
most Woodsmen in this forest earns 3 points for each forest section.

The Avenue
When an avenue (tree-lined road) is revealed, the tile is placed as a normal
road tile; however, the value of an avenue tile is 3 points. When a player

the tree. The follower is placed on his head. The tree is
considered complete when there are 3 tiles in each direction

The rules for placing the farmes change in combination with “Carcassonne - The Woods”.
A farmer can be placed, only if the part of the farm on

(the two examples on the left), or if the area of the farm is stretched to
a maximum of two

The Tree Coin
A Tree Coin counts -10 points (scored at the end!). The goal for the
owner of the Tree Coin, then, is to pass the Tree Coin again.
This may be accomplished by placing a tile horizontally or
vertically to one of the tree tiles and deploying a follower
to that tile. The Tree Coin is then given to the next player
to the left.

The Tree Coins are not specifi c to one of the two tree
tiles! For example, if both tree tiles have been placed, the owner of the

The Leaf Tile
The leaf tile allows the player to place a follower in either the forest or city
where the leaf is located, even if the area is already occupied. The leaf tile
can also be used to place a Woodsman in a previously unoccupied forest.

The Withered Leaf
The withered leaf tile allows for the removal of a follower from a green leaf tile. If a withered leaf tile is
applied to an area where a follower was deployed using a green leaf tile, you can take back that follower.
The following rules apply:
* It can only be used to take back one follower, which had been brought into play using a green leaf tile.
* If a follower is removed from a leaf tile through the application of a withered leaf tile, no follower can
be placed.
* A follower cannot be deployed on a withered leaf tile if the area (city or forest) is already occupied.
* When the withered leaf tile is attached to an unoccupied city (or used as a fi rst forest section), you
may place a follower as normal.
Final Scoring
Scoring for unfi nished forests, trees and roads with avenues
The owner receives 1 point for each section of an unfi nished forest, tree and road with an avenue.
Scoring for the Tree Coin
The owner of a Tree Coin receives “-10“ Points

Every completed forest and city, that borders a fi eld scores the owner of the fi eld

Rule amendments in conjunction with other expansions
The following applies to Tree Coins:
The Tree Coins can also be passed to the player’s left by the placing of a builder, pig, the mayor or wagon according
to the above rule.
Inns & Cathedrals
If there is an avenue on a road with an inn, do not double the avenue tile. The value is still 3 points.
A big follower can also be placed on a leaf tile.
Traders & Builders
A builder can be placed according to known rules in a forest area.
In case of deploying a farmer in an area with two tiles, the pig can be also deployed. The farmer gets
5 points for every completed forest or city.
Princess & the Dragon
The magic portal allows you to place a Woodsman in an unoccupied forest area.
The Count of Carcassonne
In the city of Carcassonne the area above the cathedral is then called tree nursery (picture on the right side).

The Tower
If a tower takes a Woodsman prisoner, another Woodsman may be placed again in this forest area (without having to use a
leaf tile). As a reminder, the captive Woodsman should be laid down (like a farmer) in the forest area. He only comes
back to the player when the forest has been completed (in the worst case, this will be never).
Bridges, Castles & Bazaars
Is a bridge build over a forest, the player gets 2 points extra.
Beggar & Plaguer (Fan-Expansion: Bettler & Peiniger)
A Woodsmann and the owner of the tree can also be tormented.
